Color Notes

Color is the element of art that is produced when light, striking an object, is reflected back to the eye.


3 Properties of Color:
Hue: the name given to the color
Intensity: the strength and vividness of the color.
Value: the lightness or darkness of a color


Pigment: the substance or powder that makes up the color of paint. Can be organic or inorganic


Primary Colors:
Red, Blue, and Yellow. Primary colors are hues that cannot be made by mixing other pigments.


Secondary Colors:
Violet, Green, and Orange. Colors that are made by mixing two primary colors together.


Tertiary Colors:
Red-violet, blue-violet, yellow-orange, red-orange, blue-green, and yellow-green. Made by mixing a primary color and a secondary color.


Complementary Colors: Colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel.
Analogous Colors: Colors that are next to each other on the color wheel.
Warm Colors: Red, Yellow, Orange
Cool Colors: Blue, Green, Violet
